Alice La Porta is the Outreach Project Manager for International Activities at ICFO, where she develops and coordinates educational and outreach initiatives to promote science and inspire diverse audiences in the field of photonics. She holds a PhD in Palaeolithic Archaeology from the University of Exeter and has conducted research at the University of Manchester and other international institutions, including the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle (MNHN) in Paris, the Universities of Bologna and Ferrara, and the IPHES in Tarragona. Before joining ICFO, she worked as an Outreach Officer at the Henry Royce Institute, connecting advanced materials research with the public. Alice is passionate about bridging science and society through collaboration, communication, and engagement.

Our Outreach team blends scientific expertise with a multidisciplinary approach to develop a diverse portfolio of programs and activities that engage audiences across all sectors of society. Silvia Carrasco (PhD, MBA) is the Vice-Director of Innovation, Sponsored Research, and Public Engagement at ICFO, where she also represents the institute on the Boards of several spin-off companies. Since joining ICFO in 2006, she has built and led the Knowledge and Technology Transfer (KTT) Team—a group of 15 professionals driving innovation, technology transfer, and outreach initiatives. Under her leadership, the team manages a portfolio of more than 150 patent families and oversees the Corporate Liaison Program. Dr. Carrasco also founded ICFO’s LaunchPad, a deep-tech start-up incubator that has launched 14 spin-off companies and continues to support new ventures at various stages of growth.

About the Institution

ICFO aims to advance the very limits of knowledge in several fields of science and technology where photonic tools and related concepts provide an edge. Photons, especially from laser light, are one of the most powerful enabling technologies currently available to humankind. We use them in our research to target the global forefront of several areas of physics and engineering, and salient topics in material sciences, chemistry, biology and medicine. We aim to tackle key challenges faced by society at large and focus on current and future problems in health, energy, information, safety, security and caring for the environment.

Verònica Ahufinger is Head of Academic Affairs at ICFO. In 2002, after finishing her PhD at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), she moved as a Marie Curie Fellow to the Leibniz Universität Hannover (Germany) and from 2005 to 2010, she was ICREA researcher. From November 2010 to April 2023, she was associate professor and from May 2023 to August 2025 full professor of the Physics Department at the UAB. She has 80 peer-reviewed publications and is co-author of a book for Oxford University Press, with more than 4100 citations. She supervised 8 PhD Thesis (currently 1 more), 11 Master Thesis and 36 final degree works. She was awarded with the PhD extraordinary award and the excellence research award of the UAB. From January 2011 to April 2014, she was Head of Studies of the Physics degree at the UAB, and from June 2014 to September 2016, vice-dean of the Science Faculty. From July 2016 to July 2018, she was scientific collaborator of the Agencia Estatal de Investigación. For eight years, she was Head of the Optics Unit of the Physics department at the UAB and from 2021 to 2025, the UAB coordinator of the interuniversity Photonics Master and the Europhotonics master.

Anna Sanpera Trigueros is an ICREA research professor at the Universitat Autonoma Barcelona (UAB) since 2005. After completing her PhD at the UAB, she pursued her research career at the University of Oxford (UK), the University of Saclay-Paris (France), and Leibniz University Hannover (Germany). Throughout her career, she has been a visiting professor at various international institutions, including the University of California, Santa Barbara (USA, 2010), Peking University (China, 2017), the University of Maryland (USA, 2018), and the ICTP-EAIFR in Rwanda (2022 and 2023).

Her main lines of research encompass quantum information theory, ultracold gases, quantum optics, and condensed matter physics. She has published over 150 scientific articles and currently leads a research group at the Autonomous University of Barcelona.

About the Institution

The Quantum Information Group of the Autonomous University of Barcelona (GIQ) is an interdisciplinary research group in Quantum Information Theory and Quantum Technologies. The group is strongly committed to research and training of young researchers. Over the last decade, the group has obtained more than 6 million euros for research using European, national and local funding.

The group currently consists of 24 researchers: 5 permanent professors (1 ICREA, 1 ICREA Acadèmia), 2 distinguished researchers (ATRAE and Talent), 5 Postdocs (BP, JC, La Caixa) and 12 PhD students (FPU, FI). Bruno Juliá Díaz is a professor in the Department of Quantum Physics and Astrophysics at the University of Barcelona (UB) since 2021. He is the coordinator of the Master’s Program in Quantum Science and Technology in Barcelona, ​​deputy director of the Institute of Cosmos Sciences (ICFO) at the UB, and principal investigator of the Complementary Plan for Quantum Communications. A graduate of the University of Seville and PhD from the University of Salamanca, he has completed postdoctoral research stays in Helsinki, Pittsburgh, and Saclay. In 2012, he was awarded a Ramón y Cajal grant at ICFO, which he later transferred to the UB. He has supervised seven doctoral theses and is currently supervising five and has authored over 100 publications in indexed journals.

Luis Trigo Vidarte is a postdoctoral researcher in the Optoelectronics group at ICFO, where he focuses on experimental implementations of quantum-safe cryptography protocols, including quantum key distribution (QKD), post-quantum cryptography (PQC), and other quantum security protocols beyond QKD, like secure multiparty computation (SMPC). He is also exploring the potential of photonic integrated circuit (PIC) implementations in computing and quantum communication protocols.

About the Institution

Our group study and develop new advanced materials, devices and systems for information and communication technologies, in particular displays, image sensors and cybersecurity.

The main driving goal is to carry out research which bridges academia and industry, by developing fundamental ideas with great potential for revolutionizing future photonic products.

About the Institution

Our group uses the extraordinary coherence properties of atoms, together with an ever-increasing sophistication in optical manipulation and measurement, to study fundamental physics of light-matter interactions, quantum optical effects in advanced sensing, and new applications of extreme sensors.

One major theme of our research is the study of quantum effects in atomic systems and the light that is used to measure them. At the most fundamental level, we study light-matter interaction processes, which efficiently produce entanglement between light and matter, and are also central to understanding essential technologies such as lasers, and future technologies such as quantum computers. Only slightly more applied, we study how quantum physics shapes the ultimate performance of atomic sensors, for example showing how the exotic coherence properties of Bose-Einstein condensates can benefit magnetic sensing. At the most applied, we develop new atomic sensors for existing applications such as biomagnetism, and new applications for atomic sensors such as magnetic resonance imaging and searches for dark matter.

Carlotta is a Systems Engineer with a PhD in Photonics from ICFO – The Institute of Photonic Sciences in Barcelona, with over 3 years of experience leading space-oriented quantum communication projects and 4+ years in photonics and integrated devices research.

Currently Tech Lead and Quantum Systems Engineer at Quside, she drives the development of Quantum Random Number Generators (QRNGs) for secure and space-based systems, overseeing everything from requirements and architecture definition to lab testing and customer relations.

Dr. Paraskevi Ganoti holds a Ph.D. in Nuclear and Particle Physics, and she works as Policy Officer at the European Commission (DG CNECT) contributing to the development of Europe’s quantum ecosystem. Sergi is Senior Innovation Manager at ICFO and Exploitation and Innovation Manager at the PIXEurope Pilot Line. He holds a BSc in Physics (UB), an MSc in Mathematics (University of London) and a PhD in Physics (EPFL). After a postdoc in Japan, he returned to Barcelona where he worked as R&D Project Leader and later R&D Director at the laser company MONOCROM. He joined ICFO’s KTT Team in 2013, contributing to the creation of several spin-offs and supporting multiple Launchpad projects. Over the years, he has coordinated several industrial projects, and managed technology transfer and IP licenses. He leads ICFO’s participation in Digital Innovation Hubs initiatives, in particular PhotonHub Europe and the Catalan EDIH, DIH4CAT. He has managed ICFO’s Corporate Liaison Program for several years and leads the industrial interaction of ICFO’s facilities. He is vice-president of Fotónica21 and former board member of the deep-tech cluster secpho.

PIXEurope is an ambitious Pilot Line initiative launched by the European Commission through the Chips Joint Undertaking, to accelerate the development of photonic integrated circuits – key to next‑generation high‑speed computing, communications and quantum technologies. During 10 years and with a budget of ~€400M, the initiative brings together 20 partners from 11 European countries to create a unified European PIC ecosystem. PIXEurope aims to become the Europe’s first fully integrated PIC pilot line. It will establish an optimized prototyping chain covering design, fabrication, integration, testing and reliability, enabling faster product development, scalable manufacturability, and open-access services for end-users.

Bio

Lydia Sanmartí-Vila is the Head of Outreach at ICFO and a member of the Diversity and Inclusion Committee at ICFO, as well as Chair of the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Working group of the European Quantum Flagship and representative of ICFO at the science and art association Hac Te. Creator of the Be an ICFOnian for a Day programme, directed to female STEM university students and of the CARLA programme, initiated in the framework of the Horizon 2020 CARLA project and continued within the current Horizon Europe 360 CARLA project, she is a member of the CSA team of the European Quantum Flagship. She obtained her PhD in neurobiochemistry from the Leibniz Institute for Neurobiology in Germany after completing her university degree in Chemistry at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, and has extensive international experience.

Our Outreach team blends scientific expertise with a multidisciplinary approach to develop a diverse portfolio of programs and activities that engage audiences across all sectors of society. These initiatives aim to inspire students, educators, scientists, industry professionals, and the general public by showcasing the transformative power of light in research, technology, and society. The ultimate goal of ICFO’s Outreach Program is to highlight the vast potential, pervasiveness, and real-world impact of photonics; light-based science and technology, fostering greater scientific literacy throughout society.
