Dr. Lydia Sanmartí-Vila – PhD KTT Outreach Coordinator at ICFO. She is ECOP’s Executive Officer, where she coordinates the pursuit of new projects for ECOP to encourage collaboration among the centres. She directs the current ICFO-coordinated project 360 CARLA and manages ICFO’s international outreach projects and activities, such as the CSA of the Quantum Flagship as well as past projects such as GoPhoton!, LIGHT2015, PHABLABS 4.0. Besides coordinating ICFO’s outreach team, she manages the arts and science programme at ICFO and Chairs the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) group of the Quantum Flagship. Lydia has a degree in biochemistry from the Autonomous University of Barcelona and a doctorate in neurobiology from the Leibniz Institute for Neurobiology/ Otto von Guericke University in Germany, and has extensive international experience in strategic communications and management consulting in the life sciences/ healthcare area.

About the Institution

ICFO is a CERCA research centre member of the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology, founded in 2002 by the Government of Catalonia and the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya · Barcelona Tech, both of which are members of ICFO’s board of trustees along with the Cellex and Mir-Puig Foundations, philanthropic entities that have played a critical role in the advancement of the institute. Located in the Mediterranean Technology Park in the metropolitan area of Barcelona, the institute currently hosts 500 people, organized in 26 research teams that use 80 state-of-the-art research laboratories. Research lines encompass diverse areas in which photonics plays a decisive role, with an emphasis on basic and applied themes relevant to medicine and biology, advanced imaging techniques, information technologies, a range of environmental sensors, tunable and ultra-fast lasers, quantum science and technologies, photovoltaics and the properties and applications of nano and quantum materials such as graphene, among others. In addition to three consecutive accreditations of the Severo Ochoa national program for top research excellence, ICFOnians have been awarded 16 elite ICREA Professorships as well as 47 European Research Council grants. ICFO is very proactive in fostering entrepreneurial activities, spin-off creation, and creating collaborations and links between industry and ICFO researchers. To date, ICFO has helped create 11 start-up companies.

Bio

Montserrat Guilleumas is professor of the Quantum Physics and Astrophysics Department at the University of Barcelona (UB) since 2005. She obtained her PhD from UB in 1995 with a thesis devoted to the study of Quantum Liquids. She continued as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Trento (Italy) from 1995 to 1999. In 2000 she moved to Germany as a research fellow at the University of Essen.

Her main research topic is the theoretical study of quantum systems, from few to many-body: quantum liquids and quantum gases. Currently she is working in Quantum Science and Technology; particularly in the use of ultracold atoms in confined geometries as quantum sensors, ultracold atoms in optical lattices as quantum simulators and as atomtronic circuits.

From 2011 to 2016 she was Deputy Director of the Structure and Constituents of Matter Department (UB), and since 2016 she is Deputy Director of the Quantum Physics and Astrophysics Department (UB). From 2013 to 2017 she was member of the Accreditation Committee for access to the university teaching body of university professors at ANECA (Agencia Nacional de Evaluación y Acreditación). Lastly, she is devoted to regular contributions to outreach for science popularization and dissemination in quantum physics.

Bio

Josep Casellas is the Research Project Manager associated with the Quantum Spain project. In his early professional career, he obtained a PhD in Quantum Chemistry, which provided him with a solid foundation in research methodologies and critical thinking. As his career progressed, he leveraged his research background to transition into a consultant position in R+D projects and, finally, into project management in BSC-CNS.

In this capacity, his primary mandate revolves around facilitating the seamless execution of research projects (planning resources, monitoring progress, anticipating problems, and promoting communication, among other functions) and ensuring the attainment of predefined objectives. He has also been actively involved in proposal management, defining project proposals, coordinating contributions, and collaborating with project PIs and the Management department to procure necessary equipment. Josep is passionate about research and project management, finding fulfillment through strategic thinking and hands-on execution. He looks forward to leveraging his skill set to drive impactful projects and contribute to the success of future endeavors.

About the Institution

Barcelona Supercomputing Center – Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS) is the national supercomputing center in Spain. BSC specializes in high-performance computing (HPC) and manage MareNostrum supercomputers: (2017) MareNostrum IV with a performance capacity of 13,7 Petaflop/s and (2023) MareNostrum V with a total peak computational power of 314Pflops. MareNostrum V is one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe.

Since its establishment in 2005, BSC has actively promoted HPC in Spain and Europe as an essential tool for international competitiveness in science and engineering. The center manages the Red Española de Supercomputación (RES), was a founding and hosting member of the former European HPC infrastructure PRACE, and is now the hosting entity for EuroHPC JU, the Joint Undertaking that leads large-scale investments and HPC provision in Europe.

BSC has successfully attracted talent, and our research focuses on four fields: Computer Sciences, Life Sciences, Earth Sciences, and Computer Applications in Science and Engineering. Their research lines are developed within European Union research funding programmes, Spanish and Catalan public research calls, and collaborations with leading companies. Serving both the global scientific community and industries, BSC boasts a multidisciplinary team and cutting-edge computational facilities, cementing its status as an international e-science hub.
