360 CARLA Health Training brings hands-on biophotonics experience to students
October 15th, 2025
On 11 October 2025, VUB Brussels Photonics (B-PHOT) hosted a 360 CARLA Health Training focused on biophotonics at the VUB Photonics Innovation Center in Gooik. The one-day event provided students and early-career researchers with an immersive introduction to how photonics technologies are accelerating advances in healthcare and life sciences.
5 participants took part in two parallel practical sessions: Fluorescence Microscopy, led by Dr. Tatevik Chalyan, and Nanofabrication for Biomedical Engineering, led by Arié Nacar. They practiced imaging biological samples, worked with scaffold structures, and explored cutting-edge techniques such as 3D direct laser writing and bioprinting. A guided tour of the laboratory facilities showcased advanced fabrication tools used for developing optical components and biomedical devices.
The small-group format allowed for personalized guidance, interactive discussions, and valuable networking opportunities. Attendees came from multiple universities and academic levels, creating a dynamic learning environment that encouraged multidisciplinary exchange.
Feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with participants highlighting the direct relevance of the training to their studies and research topics. The experience strengthened their confidence in applying biophotonics methods and inspired future involvement in the field, perfectly supporting the 360 CARLA mission to empower the next generation of photonics innovators.
