360 CARLA Training on Spectral Imaging for Medical & Health Applications held in Joensuu
October 21st, 2025
On 9 October 2025, Photonics Finland hosted a 360 CARLA Training on Spectral Imaging for Medical & Health Applications at the University of Eastern Finland in Joensuu. Organized in collaboration with the university, the training brought together students and early-career researchers for an intensive, hands-on introduction to how spectral imaging and photonics are advancing healthcare and medical diagnostics.
The one-day program combined lectures, live demonstrations and practical coding sessions, offering participants a comprehensive overview of spectral imaging techniques and their real-world applications. A particular focus was placed on dental use cases, where attendees explored how spectral data can be used to visualize veins and arteries in the oral cavity, highlighting the potential of these technologies for non-invasive diagnostics and improved clinical analysis.
Throughout the training, participants engaged directly with spectral imaging tools and methodologies. They learned the fundamental principles of spectroscopy, explored how spectral cameras operate through live demonstrations, and worked with real datasets using Python to perform preprocessing and analysis. This hands-on approach enabled attendees to gain practical skills applicable across multiple domains, including medicine, biology, industry and environmental monitoring.
The interactive format was especially well received, with participants emphasizing the relevance of the skills acquired and the value of experiential learning. As one attendee noted, “It’s a very practical training and skillset needed in various industries,” while another highlighted the importance of continuing such initiatives, stating: “More such events should be organized in future.”
Beyond the technical content, the training also provided valuable networking opportunities, fostering connections between academia and industry and reinforcing the role of interdisciplinary collaboration in driving innovation, proving how 360 CARLA programs equip participants with both the technical competencies and professional insights needed to navigate the rapidly evolving photonics and health technology landscape.
