Exploring careers in quantum technologies at the 360CARLA Symposium in Berlin

October 23rd, 2025

From 7–9 October 2025, the 360CARLA Berlin Quantum Career Symposium took place in Berlin (Germany) as part of the Photonics Days Berlin-Brandenburg. Organised by the Max Born Institute (MBI) in cooperation with OpTecBB and supported by Berlin Quantum, the symposium brought together students and early-career researchers to explore quantum technologies and communications and the career opportunities emerging across academia and industry.

The three-day programme combined a walk through some institutes in the Technology Park Berlin Adlershof, inspirational career talks, expert insights, technical sessions, and networking opportunities, helping participants better understand the quantum ecosystem and discover the many pathways into research, innovation, and industry. Sessions of the career symposium included Q-Imaging, Q-Communication LiDAR, Working in Photonics, Eco Photonics, and Women in Quantum Tech & Photonics, offering perspectives on both scientific trends and professional development.

In total, 390 participants from over 24 countries registered for the Photonics Days. Within this community, 87 participants registered specifically for the 360CARLA career symposium sessions. The audience reflected the diversity of the field, bringing together undergraduate and master’s students as well as PhD candidates and postdocs from a wide range of STEM backgrounds.

Feedback collected after the event showed a strong impact: 84% of participants reported increased interest in photonics careers, and many highlighted the value of hearing real career stories, gaining a clearer view of opportunities, and connecting directly with experts and companies.

By combining scientific excellence with personal journeys and practical career guidance, the Berlin symposium demonstrated how the quantum and photonics community can support the next generation, not only with knowledge, but also with inspiration and confidence.
