Bio

PhD, MBA, KTT Director at ICFO. Vice-chair of the SPIE Chair for Diversity in Photonic Sciences at ICFO, she served as vice-president of the Spanish mirror of the European platform Photonics21, as a Member of the Board of SECPhO and of the Investments Committee of “Caixa Invierte Start”. Currently a member of the Board of Directors of Elisava-Barcelona School of Design and Engineering and in the Board of Directors of several ICFO spin-off companies, Carrasco was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship and enjoyed research stays at several USA institutions, including the College of Optics, University of Central Florida, the Photonics Center, Boston University, and Harvard University, Boston. She received the Fem Talent Award in 2013 and the Economy and Innovation Castelldefels City Award in 2019. Already at ICFO in 2016, Silvia Carrasco created ICFO’s KTT Unit, in charge of the innovation, technology transfer and outreach activities. She has a broad experience in IPR and outreach management, resulting in a patent portfolio of more than 100 patent families and a Corporate Liaison Program. She has created ICFO’s LaunchPad, a deep-tech start-up incubator where eleven spin-off companies have been launched that currently includes new ventures in various stages of incubation.

About the Institution

The Knowledge and Technology Transfer (KTT) Team at ICFO plays a key role at the interface with the industrial and corporate worlds maximizing the flow of information, knowledge, technology and talent. The KTT Team is responsible for establishing strategic alliances and collaborations with industry, the private sector in general and all types of collaborators. With experience in both business and research, KTT develops a customized business plan that mutually benefits the company and ICFO.

The results are flexible tech transfer alliances with our partners that address their broad needs and interests, from specific research and consultancy projects, co-development, launching of joint ventures, joint labs, and personnel exchange programs, licensing, to other initiatives such as individualized life-long learning courses, workshops, priority recruitment and networking. The KTT Team is also responsible for the management of ICFO’s intellectual property portfolio, fostering entrepreneurial activities and spin off creation and the ICFO outreach program, among others.

Bio

Joanna Kargul is a University Professor in solar conversion at the University of Warsaw, Poland. She serves as the Head of the Laboratory of Solar Fuels at the Centre of New Technologies, University of Warsaw, where she applies fundamental knowledge of oxygenic photosynthesis to construct biohybrid solar-to-fuel devices incorporating robust biocatalysts and various conductive and semi-conductive materials. Alongside her team, she focuses on developing rational approaches to maximize direct electron transfer in various types of biomolecular systems, using state-of-the-art electrochemical, spectroscopic, and microscopic approaches, in conjunction with QM/MM modeling of electron transfer. More recently, this research has extended to the synthesis of new smart materials forming high-performance organic interfaces in solar-to-fuel devices.

Prof. Kargul obtained a PhD in Biological Sciences in 1999 from the University of Warwick, UK. Her postdoctoral research, conducted in the group of James Barber at Imperial College London, UK, led to several discoveries in the field of photosynthetic adaptation to extreme conditions, as well as refining the crystallographic structure of the water-splitting enzyme. She obtained habilitation in 2009 from the University of Warsaw. In 2011, as the Warsaw University Professor, she established a node for solar fuels research in Poland and has led R&I projects on the application of robust natural biocatalysts for constructing biohybrid solar cells and solar-to-fuel devices. She has experience in leading/coordinating several international initiatives (e.g. ESF EuroSolarFuels, H2020 SUNRISE CSA, POLTUR/GraphESol, HE SUNER-C CSA, and HE SUNGATE). All these initiatives have focused on the rational design and construction of efficient solar-to-fuel systems, aiming to bring these technologies to wide application.

About the Institution

The University of Warsaw (UW) is the largest and highest ranked higher education establishment in Poland. The Centre of New Technologies of the University of Warsaw (CeNT UW), where the Solar Fuels Laboratory is based, is a unique multidisciplinary research and innovation centre in which 100+ national and international interdisciplinary research programmes tackle fundamental scientific problems and apply the acquired knowledge to industry. CeNT UW hosts 31 research groups working on interdisciplinary projects in the fields of organometallic chemistry, functional materials (including novel high-performance semiconductors and photosensitisers), biological and chemical energy conversion, quantum technologies, biophysics, biotechnology, and medicine. The centre has been awarded a prestigious International Research Agenda grant to establish an interdisciplinary research unit focusing on quantum technologies for applications such as solar conversion (QOT in collaboration with the University of Oxford). State-of-the-art research infrastructure, research expertise and facilities are available, including laboratories for photoelectrochemistry and solar energy conversion, solar fuels, novel functional materials, bioinformatics and systems biology, and facilities for New Generation Sequencing, transcriptomics lab, mass spectrometry, NMR spectroscopy, cryo-EM and cell culture facilities.

Bio

Irene Lapuente is the founder and director of la Mandarina de Newton. She is a specialist in promoting projects that enhance and cross the scientific method, design thinking and creative processes. Her main interest lies in the intersection of forms of creating knowledge. She works in the field of ArtScience and she designs co-creation processes in culture, health and innovation. Before creating her own company she accumulated ten years of experience in education, museums, development of scientific communication strategies and project management. She has held positions such as Head of Communication at the Catalan Institute of Paleontology (ICP) and at the Department of Languages and Systems (LSI-UPC). She was a member of the Education Department of CosmoCaixa Barcelona.

She graduated in Physics from the University of Barcelona (UB). She followed several Postgraduate studies in Science Communication, in the Creation of Scientific Documentaries (UPF) and Teaching Skills (UPC). She has been involved with dance from a very early age, and is a graduate of the Royal Academy of Dance in London. It is from this background as a physicist, communicator and dancer, and with her enthusiasm for learning, that her inspiration emerges.

La Mandarina de Newton is a cultural enterprise focused on science and technology. Their curious, innovative, and non-conformist spirit has led them to explore fields tangent to science, such as art, design, and audiovisual language. Their work explores the scientific method, design thinking, and creative processes. They are cultural tailors, designing tailor-made projects for each situation. Research, ideation, production, and execution of projects, as well as training, are all integral to their activities. With a long history, they reach audiences of varying sizes and complexity. Their wardrobe comprises culture, education, health, and scientific-technological transfer.

They maintain a physical space in the Gràcia neighborhood of Barcelona, where new learning trends are investigated, and contemporary debates and dialogues are shared. Their aim is to expand knowledge at the border, between seams, to gain a better understanding of the challenges of the future.
